There are two truisms in farm animal management. The first is that you cannot place enough emphasis on the pre-calving or transition period.We have recently seen a spate of sub-clinical ketosis on two units, and sub-clinical hypocalcaemia on another unit. These were all picked up through routine monitoring of blood parameters as an early warning for transition failure. Diseases such as retained foetal membranes, endometritis or left abomasal displacement can sometimes get looked at in isolation, but ultimately these diseases are often a symptom of poor transition.
