Feeding prospects for the winter

The unusually dry summer weather has left much of the country deficient in forage forthe coming months. Here, ADAS advisers from around England and Wales review theposition in their own areas and suggest some courses of action for milk producers. The long dry period has and will test the resolve of the majority of dairy farmers in the South-east. Although there has been some localised rainfall, the South-east has basically gone without rain for the entire summer, with some areas having no appreciable rainfall since April. This has affected virtually every aspect of feeding and feed management for the dairy herd. Most first cut silages have analysed very well, with MEs ranging from 11.0-12.3. They have been well fermented and drier than in previous years -a very palatable roughage.
