Ayrshire breeder John Templeton didn't intend to get into dairying, but has thrown himself into the industry nonetheless, as Jeanne Gavin found out.For a man who did not intend to be a farmer, far less a dairy farmer, John Templeton is remarkably devoted to the life and to the Carnell Ayrshire herd founded by his grandfather, George, in 1923. Similar devotion is already manifest in his 20-year-old son Robin and the two, now working together on the family's Pocknave Farm, near Hurlford, Ayrshire, make an enthusiastic team successfully marrying tradition with ambition. The life is a far cry from John's intended career as an auctioneer, but he has noregrets about the family circumstances which caused the change in direction. In fact, he reckons that his five years at Lanark auction market offered a useful off-farm perspective and, perhaps more importantly, instilled discipline.
