Cornish farm takes grazing DMs as part of the routine

A strange smell in the kitchen was the only downside when one Cornish farmer decided to assess grazing dry matters on a regular basis. Now he's been told to get a microwave for the farm office before turnout this year! Farming in partnership with hisfather, Fred and Debbie Harvey farm a total of 200 acres at Lanivet, just south-west of Bodmin. The home farm consists of 75 acres of good ground over clay at over 300 ft above sea level, while the remaining land is rented and used to produce maize and grass silage for the 100-cow herd. The Holsteins calve all year round and average 8500 litres at 3.85% butterfat and 3.35% protein. The herd which is winter housed on silage fed in ring feeders and supplemented by concentrate and soya provided through out-of-parlour feeders, is fed on a flat rate compound in the parlour and turned out as early as conditions allow.
