The massive strides taken in reducing cell counts over recent years look to have come to an end and levels appear to be increasing again. Peter Hollinshead reports on why there is need for a radical rethink on mastitis control. Milk producers must undergo a radical change of mindset if they are to further improve the national cell count figure, a company vet warned this week. According to Elanco's Dr Keith Lawrence, the national cell count decline has come to a grinding halt around 250,000 cells/ml and is in fact increasing. "Milk producers need to change their way of thinking - they need to take ownership of the disease and of all animals on the farm, then find out what they are doing wrong and correct it so that other animals don't suffer from the same problem," he says.
