The primary challenge at the Rogersons' 121 ha (300-acre) farm in the heart of the Fylde's productive grassland iskeeping the rumen in a stable condition and avoiding problems associated with acidosis in order to maintain cow health, fertility and production. The herd currently has around 315 milkers, achieving an impressive herd average of more than 12,000 litres.Since cows were housed in September, they have been fed a trough-mix comprising maize silage, big bale silage, clamp silage and a range of ingredients that vary according to the quality of the forages being offered. "We regularly monitor the feed quality of forages and adjust the rest of the mix accordingly, dependent on cost and how we feel they can best complement the diet," says Mr Rogerson.
