Competing against nearly 10,000 other silage samples, Ayrshire farmer Billy Kilpatrick (below) has won this years BOCM Pauls forage competition. Making good quality grass silage is crucial for Billy Kilpatrick's system. At 105m above sea level in Ayrshire and with rainfall of almost 1,375mm a year, there is little scope for growing another forage to feed his 150 Holstein Friesians. "We really have no option up here, we definitely can't grow maize, although we are going to try some wholecrop wheat this year as an alternative source of dry matter," says Billy.
