A robotic milking unit has brought only benefits, so far, for a farming family in Sussex. Rachael Porter has been to see the results of a pound 250,000 investment.The UK's first robotic milker kicked into action last October at Ypes de Boer's Wappingthorn Farm, near Steyning, in Sussex, and has proved it is up to the job of milking his 150-strong herd. Despite teething problems with similar automatic milking systems (AMS) in Holland a few years ago (which resulted in one producer returning to a conventional parlour) Ypes reports no major technical problems so far, Instead he has seen only benefits: an increase in milk yield and a reduction in mastitis with lowersomatic cell count and TBC.
