Synthesis and characterisationof transition metal halide complexes of the xylyl-distibine,1,2-bis(dimethylstibanylmethyl0benzene

Complexes of the title ligand with Cu(I),Ag(I),Pd(II),PT(II),Rh(III),and rare examples with Ni(II) and Co(III) have been prepared and characterised by analysis,IR,UV-vis,~1H,~(63)Cu and ~(59)Co NMR specroscopy and ES~+ mass spectrometry as apporpriate.The structures of [Cu{1,2-C_6H_4(CH_2SbMe_2)_2}_2]BF_4,[PtCl_2{1,2-C_6H_4(CH_2SbMe_2)_2}],[M{1,2-C_6H_4(CH_2SbMe_2)_2}_2][PF_6]_2(M=Pd or Pt),and [NiI{1,2-C_6H_4(CH_2SbMe_2)_2}_2]ClO_4have been determined,and the varying chelate and conformations o fthe xylyl backbone in these structures are discussed.Despite the unfavourable seven-membered chelate ring and the large soft antimony donors,1,2-C_6H_4(CH_2SbMe_2)_2proves to be a surprisingly goodj ligand for late transitionmetals in medium oxidation states.
