Why opportunities will abound in 1997: Industry trends can actually work to your advantage

Change is inevitable in any industry, and dairy is no exception. Some producers will greet this change with fear and trembling. Others will acknowledge the trends and look for opportunities. In the recent Dairy Herd Management Award contest for business excellence, judges were impressed at how the really successful producers seem to spot opportunities that other producers miss. (See related story on page 7.). Those of you who have worked in corporate Americ doubt have heard of SWOT analyses. SWOT isan acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Companies use these analyses to spot opportunities, as well as threats, inherent in industry trends. Take a minute to assess the macro trends affecting the dairy industry. We think you will see that opportunities exist in each of these areas during the coming year.
