Unemployment and pauperisation of the former state farm workers

The article presents the picture of unemployment among the workers of the former PGR state farms. This is a large-scale collective, family, long-lasting and fluctuating unemployment which is the result of not only the current processes and macro-structural factors, but also of the existence of PGR settlements - a unique social and territorial structure formed in the course of historical processes. Research into the social consequences of ownership transformations in the public sector of agriculture has been carried out by the author since 1993 in selected households of the former PGR state farms in the macro-region of central Poland and in Kalisz province. In March 1997 an analysis was conducted of unemployment and material situation of families of former PGR workers in six large farms purchased or leased from the Agency of the Agricultural Property of the State Treasury. The survey covered the entire community of the former workers of these farms (132 persons). Among those polled there were persons employed by the new owners ot the farms, persons employed outside the farms and pensioners. The results of the research are an exemplification of problems presented in the article.
