ONCE again the shortages of diesel have made tillage decisions a little more difficult. Where early land preparation was envisaged, it could not take place. Cultivation now has to take place in a soil that increases in hardness daily. The diesel shortage has certainly killed a great deal of sacred cows that used to be attached to tillage. Without the benefit of expensive research, the farmer has had to make do with what he can and the results have been surprisingly good with very little drop in production, a large saving in diesel and of course a lower fuel cost. It is perhaps apposite to consider the whole issue of tillage, cultivation and seedbed preparation and get our minds clear on what we are trying to do.
