The major constituents of essential oils isolated from Pistacia spp. were analyzed by GC and GC-MS methods. Essential oil vapours from Pistacia lentiscus, P. terebinthus and P. vera (Anacandiacea) were tested for their toxicity against the adults of Sitophilus granarius (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). The amounts of essential oils applied were 4, 8, 16, 32 mul in each of the desiccators with 4 1 capacity, corresponding to 1, 2, 4, 8 mul/1 air. Although desirable insecticidal activities against thispest were achieved with essential oils of the three plant species, the oil of P. vera was found to be the most effective. Complete kill could be achieved for the essential oil of P. vera in 4 and 8 mul/1 air at 96 h. In all plant species, higher doses or longer exposure periods were more effective against S. granarius. Therefore, it can be concluded that essential oils from these three plants are potential control agents against S. granarius in store conditions.
