This paper aims to describe an award-winning training program at UK aluminium die-casting company CastAlum. Design/methodology/approach: The paper explains the reasons for the program, the form it took and the results it achieved. Findings: The paper details how the Rising to the Challenge - Building the Capability program increased flexibility and skills among the workforce, boosted employee morale and retention and encouraged teamwork and the generation and implementation of new ideas. Practical Implications: The paper highlights the financial turn-around that the company achieved against the background of a downturn in the automobile industry. Social Implications: The paper details a training program that not only helped CastAlum to move from a four-day week to five, but also laid the foundations for expanding the workforce from 88 to 107. Originality/value: The paper provides the inside story of an award-winning and transformational training program.
