On the importance of sulfur as unwanted compound in dairy cow feeding.

In the present paper the relationships between S-exposure, -requirement and -tolerance of the dairy cow or the ruminant in general are highlighted with special regard to the ruminal and postabsorptive S-metabolism in the pathogenesis of typical S-intoxications, such as the S-associated polioencephalomalacia or the secondary trace element deficiency. It was concluded that under certain feeding conditions the S-tolerance limit might be exceeded. Such situations are rather characterized by an unspecific clinical symptomatic which therefore requires a careful differential diagnosis.
