Geoscientific prospect evaluation for the Unterhaching geothermal power plant

A geothermal power plant is to be built in Unterhaching (south of Munich) capable of generating power with an installed capacity of 1-3 MW. The karstified Malm at a depth of approx. 3000 m is to he developed by two boreholes (doublet). The available seismic data was reprocessed with the aim of interpreting the fades and thus the degree of karstification of the Malm. The most prospective areas are those where diffractions (indicative of reef facies) occur together with low velocity zones (indicative of large amounts of water) and fault zones. Local analysis indicates that the expected temperatures will very probably be in the 107-110 deg C range. Regional analysis of the whole Molasse basin reveals an approx. 90 percent probability of achieving a production rate of 65 1/s at a maximum drawdown of 300 m. This satisfies the conditions for using the hot water from the Malm to generate electricity.
