Irrigation of alpine meadows: the effect of irrigation to alpine vegetation of mountain meadows described on examples in the region Lungau (Salzburg, Austria).

Two differently managed and irrigated mountain meadows on silica ground were studied and compared in the region of Lungau/Central Alps, Austria. The anthropogenic influence on vegetation was significant. The phytosociology of the vegetation under irrigation and manure treatments were examined. The periodic water-rippling prevents the tendency of acid soil and acid vegetation (dwarf shrubs and mat grass) formation. Irrigation enhanced biodiversity and the efficient meadow production can be a preventive protection against natural hazards..
