New irrigation technology and its application under farming conditions

Demand oriented irrigation scheduling requires efforts in respect to the management of the irrigation hardware. Using a sprinkler system which combines the Center Pivot System with the Linear System allows a substantial reduction of labour requirements. It was found that the system is especially suitable for medium plot sizes. Under the natural conditions of Eastern Germany irrigation is not only essential for a successful horticultural production. It applies also to other crops grown under specialised production conditions like the growing of hop, potatoes or fruits. The paper reports on the application of advanced irrigation technologies in the specialised production of four large farms in Eastern Germany.
