In October 2007,one year will have passed since the full-scale introduction of ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel for onroad diesel engines in most of North America.ULSD,which can contain a maximum of 15-ppm sulfur (S),is required to protect the advanced-emissions systems of the newest (2007) diesel engines. However, due to its reduced S content,ULSD has some inherent limitations. And not all ULSD is the same. Each refinery uses a different processing configuration. In particular,ULSD's physical and performance properties also depend on the crude oil processed and the refining processes used to develop the diesel blendstocks.
