Animal production since the Second World War requires more and more intensive technologies, including intensive genotypes also intensive nutrition. Among the various nutrients productivity was also improved by using growth promoting antibiotics whichwere available at a reasonable price. Later the requirement of animals increased and farmers began using more and more antibiotics. On the opposite side consumers also required better quality and safe products. Food safety problems became one of the maininterest in the 1990s because of the more popular information about the resistant bacterial strains in human and veterinary medicine, Avoparcin was withdrawn in 1997 followed by other growth promoting antibiotics such as bacitracin, tylosin, spiramycinand virginiamycin in 1999. The European Commission plans to also withdraw two other antibiotics recently used, avilamycin and flavo-mycin, from poultry feeds by to 2006.
