In the grown-up world, however, these huge machines are used by contractors who do site work - earthmoving, foundation, footers, and basements. Another large market is utility contractors - they install water, gas, sewer, and electrical utilities underground. There is a wide variety of hydraulic powered attachments used with excavators, such as breakers (hammers), crushers, compactors, shears, and grapples. LBX Company LLC, Lexington, Ky., the maker of Link-Belt earthmoving, forestry, and material handling equipment, recently unveiled an all-new family of hydraulic excavators, the LX Series, Figure 1. These machines feature operating weights up to 58,900 lb, engines as large as SAE net 162 hp, and bucket sizes to 1.87 yd{sup}3.
