'Black Emerald': an early-maturing, black seedless grape for the fresh market.

Derived from 7 generations of hybridization, the grape cv. Black Emerald was released in 1994 and is described. Black Emerald is an early-season seedless grape, with medium to vigorous vines on their own rootstocks. In trials in California, USA, production was excessive when vines were cane-pruned. Spur-pruned vines with bilateral or quadrilateral cordons were productive, and needed less cluster thinning. Yields of 2000 boxes/ha (box=10 kg) in commercial production were achieved. The time to maturity and sugar contents of fruits grown at Fresno and Coachella, California, USA, were compared. Application of 40 mg GA3/litre, or girdling at fruit set, increased fruit mass by an average of 0.5 g. When these 2 methods were combined, an increase of 0.7-2.6 was achieved.
