Physiological Responses of Korean Native Chinese Chive (Allium tuberosum) Having Different Chilling Tolerance under Chilling Treatment

We have surveyed physiological responses of a cold-resistant Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum Rottl.) to low temperature (4 deg C). A Korean native Chinese chive, 'Kimjae', showed strong resistance to cold stress. Compared to the 'Yeongatm', 'Kimjae'showed less ion leakage and lower level of malondialdehyde, which results from membrane damage caused by chilling injury. After cold treatment, hydrogen peroxide levels increased rapidly in 'Yeongam'. In contrast, hydrogen peroxide level in 'Kimjae' wasunchanged. Catalase activities of both cultivars in cold temperature were similar. Peroxidase activity of 'Yeongam' was decreased at cold temperature, but peroxidasc activity of 'Kimjae' was increased at 24 h after cold treatment. These results indicatethat peroxidase function is one of the most important antioxidant factors and that the high level of peroxidase activity in 'Kimjae' may mediate cold tolerance.
