Changes in bent neck, water balance, and vase life of cut rose cultivars as affected by preservative solution

The study was conducted to investigate the changes of bent neck, neck strength, water content, water balance, and tissue pH of cut rose (Rosa hybrida) flowers of four cultivars as affected by preservative solution containing 3 percent Sucrose, 200 ppm 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (HQS) and 0.1 mM ethionine (SONK1 solution). Vase life of 'First Red' and 'Saphir' was much longer than those of 'Red Velvet' and 'Sonia'. 'Red Velvet' flowers held in deionized water occurred severe bent neck within 8 daysafter harvest. Rose flowers held in preservative solution resulted in extending vase life and inhibiting flower senescence and bent neck in four cultivars. Neck strength of 'First Red' and 'Saphir' was stronger than those of 'Red Velvet' and 'Sonia'. Also neck strength was significantly stronger when cut flowers were held in preservative solution as compared with deionized water. Water contents of neck, upper stem, and lower stem were decreased in 'Red Velvet' which showed frequent bent neck and short vase life, whereas 'First Red' showed no bent neck and long vase life recorded constant water contents during senescence of cut flowers. Water content was significantly increased when cut flowers were held in preservative solution as compared with those in deionized water. Water balance of rose flowers held in deionized water was changed to minus value faster than those held in preservative solution. 'Red Velvet' had more absorption and transpiration of water. This caused fast change to minus value in water balance and bent neck. Tissue pH gradually increased in petal and stem of rose cultivars during senescence. Tissue pH of flowers held in deionized water was higher than those held in preservative solution. Increased tissue pH of rose flowers caused rapid change to blueing and yellowing of petals.
