True cost of using fertilisers on the land

Rob Lilywhite and Clive Rahn at Warwick HRI, University of Warwick, calculate the carbon footprints of three main fertilisers and reveal the products that have the highest emission levels. These days you can't open a newspaper or magazine, or turn ontheTV, without coming across a reference to greenhouse gas emissions, carbon footprints and how we must all reduce our environmental impact. And the pressure on businesses is likely to intensify, as the British Standards Institution (BSI), with help from Defra and the Carbon Trust, is close to developing a standard method of measuring the embedded greenhouse gas emissions in products and services.
