Green roofs have shed their hippy image and joined the mainstream as a viable design option. Green roofs are taking root, if the balance sheets of companies such as Greenfix are anything to go by. Last year, one 10th of the company's business came from installing a green-roof system called Sky-Gardens. This year, it's likely to double that, and managing director Mike Cottage reckons that next year half his trade will come from pegging down Sedum mats. "Green roofs today are what recycling was 10 years ago," says Cottage, who has bases in Cheltenham, Teesside and London. "We were seen as a lot of tree huggers in those days,. These days, you're something of a social leper for not singing from the hymn sheet."
