The havoc leaves cause with the onset of autumn is renowned. Not only are they blamed for copious train cancellations, but for a host of other problems. So it's hardly surprising that local authorities, grounds maintenance contractors and horticulturists are gearing up for the annual leaf season. But the scale of the job is enormous. Marketing manager Tony Hawkins of machinery manufacturer Countax says there are two main reasons why leaf collection is important, "When leaves fall and are allowed to rot, they can cause serious problems to grass. They can allow mould to develop, which prevents grassy areas from obtaining the light they require to flourish," he says. "But clearing up leaves also keeps amenity areas clean and tidy."
