Discover how an organic fertiliser works before you apply it to soil. Spread a 20:20:20 and, whoopee, you get a result. Grass growth takes off and everyone is happy. You know exactly where you are with a conventional fertiliser. There is a certain predictability of performance. But what about organics? Organic fertilisers are supposed to provide the benefits of longevity and a more sustained pattern of growth with less of the peaks-and-troughs syndrome associated with artificial fertilisers. They may also go someway to appeasing greens committees and public pressure for the use of more natural products as an alternative to chemicals. But, while using organics may seem an easy way of showing your green credentials, there is a lot to understand if the desired results are to be achieved. "The question is finding the products that are going to perform and then using them in the way that gets results," says managing director Jonathan Harmer at Farmura Environmental, supplier of the Farmura liquid organic fertiliser range. Harmer promotes his products to work alongside chemical ones.
