The first Robert Myers knew of his award was when he read about it in his morning newspaper. The silver-gilt medal he received for his Chelsea flower show garden was a gong with a difference: it was a guerrilla gong. Not only had the landscape architect never heard of the award, he had no idea who had bestowed it upon him. Its source turned out to be the Lawn Society, and the purpose of the recently launched award was to elevate turf to a higher status in the horticulture pecking order (HW, 31 May).
