The association is in need of a fresh new image and a man who will deliver. That man is PhilipAusten. The new chairman of the British Bedding & Pot Plant Association (BBPA) is a surprise choice. He is the first post holder who neither grows plants norruns a nursery. But when it comes to the black art of marketing and promoting yourself, he's your man. Austen takes the lead at a crucial point for a group desperate to widen its appeal, brush out a few institutional cobwebs and woo new members. This cultural journey will start any day now with a name change to the British Protected OrnamentalsAssociation. That name aims to give the association - or "brand" in marketing lingo -a less narrow focus and a more inclusive feel. And the word is out. Chrysanthemum and cut-flower growers are already said to be warming to this new broader church.
