Environmental care comes under attack

The findings of a recent survey highlighted the need to put more emphasis on the upkeep of the UK's urban open space. Once its slogan appeared everywhere. There were adverts on television and on billboards, but whatever happened to the Keep Britain Tidy campaign? It was a powerful voice in its field with stars such as Morecambe and Wise, Abba and Lulu appearing on the posters. The campaign is still flourishing as part of charity Environmental Campaigns, or EnCams as it is known. Its main focus is still litter, but EnCams also targets dog fouling, maintaining clean beaches and other environmental issues, and is involved in the Greenfingers Challenge, a national gardening competition designed to involve the young. Recently the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs commissioned EnCams to gauge the condition of the local environment across England (HW, October 10). The result was the Local Environmental Quality Survey of England.
