Revival of the cherry

For the last 50 years the British cherry has been in decline. Faced with imports from other countries, growers found that the British crop was no longer viable. Growers began grubbing up cherry orchards and using the land for other crops. An entire traditional branch of agriculture was threatened with extinction. However, the past few years have seen a revival in the fortunes of the cherry. New types of tree, new techniques and a determination by the supermarkets to reduce food miles, is heralding arevival of the entire industry.
