ON OCTOBER 23,2013, my good friend Shayne Chandler and I awoke at early dawn to the din of cooking pots readying breakfast at just over 10,800 feet on a narrow ridge leading to the summit of Mt. Phongan in northern Myanmar. We unzipped our tent to reveal a crisp lucidity to the sky we had not yet witnessed, while across immense sweeps of forest on either side of our campsite echoed haunting vocalizations of monkeys and languars. We were emotionally on top of the world by what promised to be an exceptional day: we would attempt to climb to the top of the peak this morning and back again to our camp before nightfall.
