ONE OF THE finest adornments of any Eastern or Midwestern garden after dark isn't even a plant. It's the flashing lights of fireflies in June and July, sometimes so numerous in a moist summer garden that it's hard to tell where the twinkling stars endand the fireflies begin.Along with ladybird beetles, fireflies are beloved by children. What child of the East hasn't gleefully caught them at dusk and fallen asleep by the light of his flashing lantern in a bedside jar? However, not too many people know the meaning of those flashing green or yellow lights, or how the fireflies manage their luminous trick.
