Glycoform-Dependent Antigenicity in gpl20 of HIV-1 Envelope Protein

According to the "2012 Report on the Global AIDS epidemic" published by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) had infected 34 million people worldwide by the end of 2011. Since then, the number of individuals newly diagnosed with HIV infection has continued to decline. Worldwide,the number of new cases reported in 2011 (2.5 million) was 20% lower than that in 2001. However, in the Middle East and North Africa,there was a 35% increase in the number of new cases reported during the same period. Thus, the development of an effective vaccine against HIV is critical for controlling the epidemic.
