Osteoarthritis, which is also known as degenerative joint disease, is characterized by joint degeneration and loss of cartilage. The breakdown of these tissues eventually leads to pain and joint stiffness. The joints most commonly affected are the knees, hips, and those in the hands and spine. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and increases dramatically with age. According to the National Institute of Health, an estimated 12.1% of the US population (nearly 27 million Americans) aged 25 and older have osteoarthritis.
