Seeds of 7 field bean cultivars, stored for 9 years at -14 deg C, +4 deg C or +18 deg C and water content of 8 -- 10%, were analysed for viability/vigour level and the content and composition of phospholipids. Seeds retained the higher vigour and viability, the lower was the temperature of their storage. The major phospholipids in high viability seeds (germinability 87 -- 97%) were phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and phosphatidylinositol (PI). In deteriorated seeds PE and PC declined almost completely, while PI level was reduced by 50%. Seeds with intermediate viability levels (germinability 77 -- 90%) contained intermediate amounts of these phospholipids. The above pattern was observed in both cotyledons and embryonic axes. It has been concluded that the extent of phospholipid degradation was correlated with the level of seed exudate conductivity and viability depression due to prolonged storage.
