What? You didn't plant any bulbs in pots last fall for spring forcing? Not to worry! There are plenty of pots of them being offered at your favorite garden center. This may seem like cheating, but the rewards are great — and enduring. I used to buy atraditional white Easter lily (L. longiflorum) each year. After it had finished blooming, and I had nursed it along in the greenhouse until the ground had warmed, I would transplant it into the garden. There, it sometimes bloomed again in late summer, never to be seen thereafter in this New England climate. However, in recent years I have plunged the plant, pot and all, into the soil in the herb garden for the summer. In the fall I would bring it back into the greenhouse and allow it to go dormant. Sometime during the early spring, green sprouts would appear in the pot, and I would soon have my annual Easter Lily.
