This tip was discovered (rediscovered?) last year with the annual planting of our young tender tomato plants into the garden soil. All the time hoping the weather would be kind enough for the young plants to get established. Our tip begins with the typical tomato cage in the ground, the young plant already planted, mulch placed about the base and it having been watered. First take a few full size pages of newspapers and wrap around the cage, attaching it occasionally with small pieces of duct tapeon the vertical supports, starting at the top of the newspaper. This serves as a temporary wind screen, shade cloth and rain shield for the young plant. The paper should remain there for 1-2 weeks and then removed and can be placed on the garden soil tobecome a weed barrier and eventually decompose. The end result is having the plant hardened off and ready to begin the business of producing blooms and tomatoes. (Left)
