摘要

AN 80-YEAR tradition began in 1931 when the Hoard's Dairyman Cow Judging Contest first appeared in the magazine. In the early days, contest classes began in December because it took longer for the postal system to deliver mail. However, just like today's contest, winners were honored in our May issues. Some 40,000 readers entered the inaugural contest which featured five classes of cows. Those early classes were made up of daughters of one bull referred to as a "Get of Sire." In 1953, associate editor Gene Meyer began selecting animals all from one farm as breeding programs began to evolve. That just happened to be the year Frosty was born, the first U.S. calf resulting from artificially inseminating a cow with frozen semen.
