Heterosis for Quality Attributes in Sweet Sorghum Hybrids Using Cytoplasmic Genie Male Sterile Lines

A study was made to assess the nature and extent of relative heterosis, heterobeltiosis and standard heterosis using five cytoplasmic genie male sterile lines and seven sweet stalk genotypes. The hybrids AKMS 22A x RSSV 9, BJ 3A x RSSV 9, BJ 3A x VMS98001, AKMS 22A x ASV 9408 and AKMS 14A x RSSV 9 were superior for the sweet sorghum quality traits among the 35 F_1 hybrids evaluated. These hybrid combinations could be exploited in heterosis breeding for high biomass and ethanol yield.
