Chickpea is predominantly a rainfed winter season crop. It is one of the major pulse crops of our country, which is cultivated in an area of 7.65 m ha with a production of 6.01 mt and a productivity of 832 kg ha~(-1). Considerable yield improvement insmall seeded chickpea has been achieved through development of appropriate agrotechniques. Of late there is a preference for bold seeded chickpea among the consumers. Hence the area under bold seeded chickpea is being slowly increased. In order to improve the yield of this variety of chickpea several attempts are being made. P is the main limiting nutrient element for chickpea without which higher production is not possible. Since fixation is higher in vertisols, it is more important to know the quantity of P required in soil to raise P fertility. Moreover, chickpea is highly responsive to P fertilization. As there is paucity of information on the response of kabuli chickpea to varying seed rates and phosphorus levels, this experiment was conducted to fix an optimum seed rate and P level.
