Involving all stakeholders

In last month's Insight we commented on the new HSE strategy - in particular we discussed the involvement of all stakeholders in the process of managing health and safety risks in the workplace. If we look more closely at this admirable aim, a number of important issues arise. Firstly, who do we mean by stakeholders? Some are fairly obvious: workers are the ones most likely to be injured or killed should an organisation fail in its duties of care. We also need to consider senior management of enterprises who have specific legal duties, but may also have responsibilities to shareholders relating to corporate governance and loss of reputation. Other stakeholders may include customers and suppliers.
