Control of Legionella

ACCORDING to the first of three presentations on this DVD, the Legionella bacterium thrives in warm water, the danger zone is between 20 deg-45 deg Celsius, and the primary route into the human body is by inhalation of fine droplets. The presentation, An Introduction to the Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems, first appeared in 2002 and gives the background to the problem with Legionella. The first UK outbreak occurred in Staffordshire in 1983, for example, and the bacteria are fatal to around 12 percent of those infected. Some 200 to 250 cases are reported each year in the UK, though it is estimated that around half of these were contracted abroad.
