Directors' duties committee makes final report

THE steering group advising the HSE's executive board in its decision on whether to recommend a legal duty on company directors to protect workers has delivered its final report. The report (www.hse.gov.uk/leadership/steering-group-report.pdf ) clears the way for the board to decide whetherto recommend a new duty to ministers. The steering group, chaired by HSE's chief scientist Patrick McDonald and made up of representatives of trade unions and employers' bodies, analysed two surveys of company directors in summer 2008 and autumn 2009 to assess the impact of the voluntary guidance issued jointly by the Institute of Directors (IOD) and the HSE board in its previous incarnation as the Health and Safety Commission (HSC).
