National Grid Gas has been fined ?1 million after an engineer's femur was broken when he became trapped between two pipes during a gas main rupture. The conviction followed a fine of ?2 million imposed on the firm in December last year after a boy died when he fell off a pipeline. The latest conviction involved an incident in June 2014 when National Grid was repairing a gas main in Scunthorpe. There had been a leak in the same place in 2007, which was fixed using a "temporary" repair consisting of a sealing material that was placed along the bottom of the main and several stainless steel bands holding the repair in place.
