REACH: matters of substance

REACH - the EU regulation on the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals - is still the largest ever single European legislative package. It took a decade of horse trading, with fierce lobbying by environmental campaigners such as Friends of the Earth on one side and the European chemicals industry on the other, before it finally came into force in 2006.
