Career path: Phill Firmin

I found myself at a crossroads - I was dissatisfied with my role as a construction works officer and uneasy about poor health and safety standards - and I decided I needed a career change. I applied for a new health and safety training manager position at the Ministry of Defence [MoD], I wanted to try and make a difference to the health and safety training setup for the Corps of Royal Engineers, which appealed to me because of the peculiar nature of risk the forces have to deal with. I knew I needed to push on, so while in the post I completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Management at Portsmouth University, which allowed me to register as a corporate member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health [IOSH].
