Businesses operating in low risk environments can justifiably use measures such as accident frequency or lost time injury rates to measure and compare their success in managing safety. In firms such as Anglo American, however, operating in sectors where the price of a control failure might easily be a life, safety managers don't have that luxury. The multinational mining company, which has its headquarters in London and a worldwide workforce of 148,000, achieved a 30% drop in its accident frequency in 2014. Nevertheless it recorded six deaths in the same year.
