THE FIRST part of this article featured in the March 2008 issue of HSW and examined the legal requirements for Safety Data Sheets (SDSs). All current SDSs should provide information under the 16 headings shown in the box on page 33. Whether you are likely to be compiling data sheets or interpreting them in the workplace, Element B2 of the NEBOSH syllabus says students must be able to outline their contents. This article sets out the common contents of an SDS. The first item of information under this subheading is the name of the substance or preparation. The name should be identical to that on the label that conforms with Regulation 8 of the Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations, known as CHIP 3.
